Obituary for Edmund V. Cervone

Dr. Edmund Vincent Cervone 82, of Pennington, N.J. passed away on November 21, 2014. Born on February 14, 1932 in Trenton, NJ, to parents Sophia and James Cervone. Ed was the third of five siblings; Doris Marcol, Frank Cervone, Dolores Wooden, and Caroline McVitty. They lived on Lawrence Road above the family business, Cervone & Son Shoe Store. Dr. Cervone, a graduate of Trenton Central High School and The Hun School of Princeton, received his bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1955. He embraced his passion for education and taught at several schools and universities before completing his doctorate at Temple University in 1974. A pioneer in the field of learning disabilities, Dr. Cervone, affectionately known as "Doc", brought to The Pennington School, his concept of a program providing academic support for bright students with diagnosed learning differences while attending mainstream college-preparatory classes in the traditional School program. The Center for Learning opened in 1975 and was an immediate success; it has served as a model program for independent schools around the country that seek to educate nontraditional learners. Dr. Cervone touched many young people's lives and helped them reach their full potential. In addition to his professional accomplishments, former students and parents will remember him for his combination of firmness, compassion, and sense of humor. Although proud of his professional accomplishments, Ed would want to be remembered foremost as a brilliant joke teller, a leader of parades, an exceptional fisherman, a formidable golfer, a talented piano player, a champion of the underserved, and a loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed by all. Ed is survived by his wife Marian Cervone of Pennington, NJ, and their four children Elisabeth Hawkey, William Hawkey and his wife Karen, Edmund Cervone, and Jennifer Lane and her husband Steven Lane. He was blessed with five wonderful grandchildren, Billy, Steven, Elise, Heidi, and Heath. He is also survived by his sisters Doris Marcol, Dolores Wooden, and Caroline McVitty and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Frank Cervone. There will be a gathering of family and friends at Blackwell Memorial Home at 21 N. Main St. in Pennington, NJ on Monday, November 24 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to either the Center for Learning at The Pennington School or the Wounded Warrior Project.
