Dr. Julio Cesar del Castillo

August 21, 1927 — February 27, 2019

Dr. Julio Cesar del Castillo, Sr., 91, of Cardenas, Cuba, born on August 21, 1927 in Matanzas City, Matanzas, Cuba, passed away at home on February 27, 2019 in Ewing, NJ. He was a graduate of University of Havana medical school. Julio was married to Gladys (née Cardenas) since 1956. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ana; son, Julio, Jr.; and grandchild, Carlos. Julio is survived by his son, Juan, his wife Sara, of Ewing, and Juan’s daughter Mariel; and his son José, his wife Christine and their two children – Julian and Magdalena – of Mill Valley, CA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, godchildren, and friends who held him dear. Julio was a past-president of the Mercer County Medical Society, and a vice president of Pro-Cuba Association in Elizabeth, NJ. Julio’s career spanned decades in the New Jersey Department of Corrections as a medical director and as a forensic psychiatrist for other organizations after his retirement from the state. He was published numerous times in medical journals, including a theory about the link between schizophrenia and bee stings, in the mid-1960s, which was picked up worldwide. Aside from medically-related writings, he wrote and published two books (a novel and a memoir), and countless articles and musings for magazines and newspapers, in both English and Spanish. However, his accomplishments pale in comparison to the effect he had on those who knew him. He was genuinely kind, loving and caring and made everyone feel special. As part of his last wishes, there will be no services held. If you would like to make a donation in his name, please donate to the cancer charity of your choice, as he lost two of his children to the disease.
