Obituary for Harold Ira Herstein

Harold Ira Herstein was born on December 21, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Harry worked in computer systems and traffic engineering for Computran for 40 years and most recently, Marine Tiger. A graduate of Brooklyn Polytechnic, Harry was proud to be an engineer and was an avid technology enthusiast. He had a long-lasting passion of tinkering with electronics and learning about the latest devices on the market.

In January, Harry celebrated 50 years of marriage to his high school sweetheart, Laura. The couple was set up on a blind date by their friends, Nate and Nancy, and the rest was history. They first resided in Lodi, NJ, then purchased their family home in Vernon Township where they raised their two daughters.

As a loving father to Andrea and Julie, Harry encouraged his daughters’ independence and supported their many interests and aspirations. He was a firm believer in education and was especially proud of his daughters’ professional careers and passion for learning. As a father-in-law, Harry enthusiastically welcomed Paul into his family with open arms. He enjoyed their shared love of technology, and bequeathed his prized Commodore PET to Paul as a wedding gift.

‘Pop Pop’ was an adoring grandfather to Patrick. He loved encouraging Patrick's love of Legos and Hot Wheels and became a baseball fan to root for Patrick's Lawrence Thunder team and the New York Mets. He enjoyed spending time with Patrick talking about all things engineering, space exploration, and Tesla.

Harry was known for his big personality and his ability to make puns. He loved to make people laugh, especially through the “dad jokes” that he frequently told his nieces Isabella, Caroline, and Ava, daughters of his brother-in-law Tom and wife Eileen, family with whom he very much enjoyed spending occasions and holidays.

Throughout his career and travels, Harry built lifelong friendships with Meir, Marcia and Ira that lasted decades, and he cherished their regular brunches and get-togethers.

Harry is survived by his wife Laura, his daughters Andrea (Paul) and Julie, and his brother-in-law Tom (Eileen). He is also survived by his brothers Cal (Laura), Frank (Judy) and Arthur (Wendy) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Lee Herstein, his brother Steve (Wendy), and his grandchildren Angel and Bennett.

Service will be held 1:30PM Tuesday Feb 09, 2021 at Blackwell Memorial Home, 21 N. Main St. Pennington, NJ 08534. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a charitable donation in his name be made to Code.org (or any organization that supports STEM education for children) or The United States Holocaust Museum.
